If you are just starting out with building niche websites or you have already started but want to max out your on page SEO then this post is for you. After Selecting a good niche, researching the competition, and then (hopefully) finding an exact match domain, it is time to set up your website so you can start making some money online. I go through a process that is quick and effective, I will also share some of my favourite plug-ins.
If you register your domains on Godaddy and many other popular hosting companies installing wordpress is easy (most of the big hosting companies have one click install). If you are not sure how to install wordpress check with your hosting company (try google or youtube for a tutorial). Setting up WordPress should take about 5 minutes, once you have it installed you will want to optimize it before adding any content.
Optimizing a WordPress Niche Site for SEO
Step One – Install a theme:
You don’t want the boring old theme that comes stock with wordpress, you want something suited for your niche. If you are selling a product and want to monetize your niche site with Amazon I recommend a nice clean theme with a sidebar. You want the reader to read your articles so you can pursuade them to buy the products. I find having a sidebar is nice to highlight deals, top 5 lists, popular products and more. I found this theme originally on https://www.thesmartconsumer.com and thought it would be perfect for my site as well.
If you want to monetize your site with adsense I recommend a theme that does not have any sidebars. I find that if you really want to crank up the click through rate (CTR) of your ads eliminating distractions is important. Any time the visitor looks at something in the sidebar is precious seconds where they are not looking at your ads (and not clicking on them). Also ads in the sidebar have low CTR compared to ads in other locations (more on that in another post)
Step two – Settings:
Under the settings tab is where you want to make most of your tweaks, there are not a lot to do, but they are very important if you want to increase your chances of ranking in the search engines.
Under general settings there are two fields you will want to optimize, Site Title and Tagline. The title is used in the search engines and is very important, you want your top keyword to be in your title, and you want your lower search volume keywords to be in the tagline. Make it sound natural. My site title would be something like : Used Socks – Find used socks for sale. My Tagline would be something like: Find the best price on used cotton socks, and used wool socks
There is only one field to fill out here, scroll down to where it says update services and there is a box that says http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ When you add a new post a ping is sent to this URL to let the service know you added a new post. I’m not too sure how important this next step is, but I do it every time just to make sure my posts are being indexed. Open this txt file, copy every url and then paste it into the Update services box. This will notify a tonne of services every time you add a post
Under this tab you can configure the settings to your personal preference. Usually I keep the front page displaying my most recent posts (sometimes I change this after the site is receiving a lot of traffic and I want to really maximize the traffic going to the homepage). Also you can select the number of posts that the front page shows, I usually set it to two or three, if you keep it at 10 and your front page shows full posts there will be A LOT of content on your front page after you add a few articles
The only thing I normally mess with here is the box that says “allow people to post comments on new articles” if you want comments leave that checked, otherwise uncheck it (and avoid a tonne of spam comments)
This is the most important tab. This is the tab that will change how your posts display, and you can choose keywords for your categories and tag pages. If you leave this at the default your posts will display like this example.com/?p=125 or something ugly like that. If you change this your post will look like this example.com/smelly-used-socks. Much better for SEO
To change your permalinks just select the custom structure and then paste this /%postname%/ in the field. Now when you write a new blog post the title will be used as the URL.
You can also set the category and tag base, I like to toss some relevant keywords in there. In this case I might put USED in the category field and SOCKS in the tags field.
That’s it for the settings, now lets add some plugins
Two Must Have FREE Plugins for Niche Sites
The two plugins I always install are “Advertisement management” and “all in one seo pack”
Advertisement management – This is a very simple plugin, what it does is add a placeholder in all the best spots for ads, if you want to put adsense, or an affiliate link in EVERY page or EVERY post you can choose exactly where you want it. Here are the locations you can put an ad
Adspot 1: Below posts title on the front page.
Adspot 2: Below the title when post is open.
Adspot 3: Below post content when post is open.
Adspot 4: Below title when a page is open.
Adspot 5: Below page content when a page is open
PRO TIP: If I am putting a large square ad below the title I usually want to wrap the text around it, just put the adsense code inside this div and then put all the code in your box to have the text wrap around your adsense ad.
Last step – Get rid of default junk
All in one SEO pack – This is a great plugin to have if you want more control over your title tags and descriptions. I use it to control what the search engines see for posts, pages and other areas of the site. It is a great way to toss in more keywords and get more search engine traffic. Once you have it installed there will be a lot of things to play with, I usually just add a home title and description, and then change the post, page and category titles to just display the post title
When you install wordpress there is a default post, comment and page, go to the post page and delete the post, then go to the pages tab and delete the sample page. I have forgotten to do this before and it looks bad if you are building links to a site that has a sample page, or a Hello Word post on it 😉
That’s pretty much all I do to set my site up. It took a lot longer to write this post then it takes for me to set a site up, once you are good it shouldn’t take long at all.
- Finding keywords to write about on your niche site
- Adding content to the niche site
- Link building for Niche sites
In addition to that bold phrase, he let out another important message too. Everybody wants to become a millionaire until its time to do what millionaires do. This is seen in the things we choose to do and not to do.
For example, nobody wants to take risks with stocks investment. Another example; few people accept to go back to school to learn more and use that as a tool to increase our own financial value.
There are 3 main things you can do, to change your financial status in 6 months. This period of time is arbitrary. As it can be more or less than 6 months, depending on how you choose to tackle the situation. Also, these 3 things can be done in your day to day life.
I reduce these 3 main things to three letters. Namely, B. I. G. But how can B. I. G. help you?
B. I. G. As Your Key To Financial Success.
Financial success is a subjective concept.
More than a third (39 percent) of American investors say they define “financial success” as being debt-free, according to a recent survey released by TD Ameritrade. And 29 percent define “financial success” as being able to save money for long-term goals such as education and retireme – thinkadvisor
But what about the other 32 percent of the American population? What about if you are not an American? How would you describe financial success? The numbers from thinkadvisor show us that there are more that one answer. Hence, we can deduce that financial success is subjective.
Here are some of the most frequent answers I have come across on the internet:
- Paying for college education.
- Retiring early.
- Affording a vacation home.
- Getting a good night’s sleep.
- Earning at least X amount of dollars per month.
- Being able to take care of my family and me completely.
All these are supplementary answers to that provided by thinkadvisor. As a result, it is easier to say that each one of us has his/her own definition of financial success.
No matter what your definition of financial success is, there exist a barometer for it. This barometer is a function of your financial situation. As a result, it is a sure measure of how well you are doing financially.
This barometer is your bank account. There is no need to conduct a survey for this. The majority of the population is not satisfied with their earnings. As a result, the amount of debt contraction is ever increasing.
Your bank account is the result of the choices you – Daniel Ally
As you weave your way through the modern world, people try to tell you what to do. There are always people telling you what they think you should do. In addition to that, refusal on your part may offend some. Sometimes, you can be tempted to do as they say. It may seem fine to do what you are told to do. It may seem fine to choose to be someone else, based on what others want you to be. On the other hand, if you try to be someone else, who will be you?
Expectations are good servants but bad masters. In other words, do not try to live up to others’ expectations. On the contrary, live up to your own expectations.
Reading this article means you have expectations you want to deal with. You are reading this article today because you would like to improve on your finance. There is a certain aspect that you want your bank account to have. Unfortunately, that bank account does not look like what you want. In addition to that, you may not know where to start.
The concept of B. I. G. is the key to getting you to what you define as financial success. No matter how you define it. In addition to that, the amount of effort you put in, will add to the process and get you to where you want.
But what exactly is the meaning of B. I. G?
Introduction To B. I. G.
As defined in the previous section, B. I. G. is key to your financial success. An explanation of this concept will let you know how you can hit the ground running.
B: Books you read.
Books can solve all the problems in the world. But you don’t have to read all the books in the world. – Daniel Ally
Books have always been the main aid to learn new skills. Starting back in nursery school. In nursery school, you had books to color. In elementary school, you used to have books in order to learn new words. In addition to that, you had the dictionary. Which is a book of its own.
In secondary school, you had books to know new concepts. New concepts such as the law of gravity. Displacement reactions. Calculus, prose, drama, poetry, cumulonimbus clouds, the list is endless. Even when it came to sports, you had books. In basketball for example. There are many books that have been sold. These books teach the fundamentals of basketball.
In college, you still had books. Here is where you started learning about life changing skills. Like fundamental analysis, computer programming and requirements engineering.
Readers are leaders. – Daniel Ally
The main reason people do not read books is lack of time. At least that is what they say. Reading a book does not take more than 10 to 20 minutes a day. This is for the busiest people. Less busy people can afford to spend more that 20 minutes a day for a book.
You can spend 20 minutes a day checking NBA trade rumors. Or you can spend 25 minutes a day reading daily gossips on social media. Given that you do both of these researches on your phone mostly. Why not spend 10 minutes a day into something that can turn that phone of yours into an iPhone 7?
I: Individuals That Make Up Your Daily Life
There is a west African saying that goes like this:
Eagles don’t fly with pigeons.
This basically means, birds of the same feathers fly together. In other words, you are where you are today thanks to your surroundings. Whether you like it or not. You are the sum total of the 5 people that surround you the most.
Changing your bank account also means changing your environment a bit. What are the main benefits of your friendships? What do you bring to the table?
In order to change you reality, you have to change your mentality. As a result, I suggest you use the law of 33%:
From the people who are where you want to be in the future. You learn what you have to do. You learn what you have to stop doing. In addition to that, you learn the necessary attitude to getting to your final target. Where do you find the people above who can mentor you? You can contact entrepreneurs and authors through social media and email. If you do some research, you will find that most of them are open for communication.
The second 33% of your time, you spend it with people where are where you are. These are your friends. These are the people you spend fun time with. This is when you relax.
The last 33% percent of your time, you spend it with people yearning to be where you are. These are mostly your junior ones. Spending time with them helps you. You can tell them about your mistakes. And how you countered. In addition to that, you can do with them what you want your mentors to do with you. This sharpens the sense of leadership.
G: Goals You Set For Yourself.
It is necessary that you set goals. Unless you will not know whether you are successful or not. To illustrate this, an example would be adequate. If your financial goal is 4000$ per month. Whenever you succeed in reaching the 4000$ mark, you know you did it right. On the contrary, if you just want additional money, even 10$ fits that goal. But if is not what you need.
A good goal is one that takes care of at least one of the most basic and frustrating needs.
The problem with goals is, people try to do too much too soon. The steadier the progress, the more permanent is tends to be.
Finally, writing your goals down will help you more. There is a popular saying which goes as follows:
A dull pencil is better than a sharp mind.
B. I. G. As A Tool To Make Money:
Now you know what B. I. G. means. You know this deadly combination that can be the key to stirring your life in the direction you desire. But, how exactly do you apply this?
The problem with great tools like this is common. That is, people often come across tips and guidelines that will help. But they do not do what is recommended.
To apply B. I. G. to make money, you need to go step by step.
- Choose a book that will help you make money. And start with it. At the end of this article, I will give you the book you need to start growing financially.
- Divide your free time into 3 parts and use it as stated above.
- Set goals for yourself. Goals you can measure. In addition to that, write down your goals.
In today’s online business world, the money is in the list. Any online entrepreneur striving to make a decent income out of the internet needs to have an email list. Not having an email list puts your business’ life at a big risk. Having understood this, some online entrepreneurs only specialize in list building.
That is, they do not have a blog, or a Fan page. All they do is collect email addresses on the internet and then start marketing to their subscribers. I tried that before. It takes up much less time than having a platform. But you will have to spend money, a lot of it.
Here, we talk about building an email list with your own blog or website. All the methods I talk about here are the ones I implement on my website. As a result, I recommend you build your own blog or website and implement them there. If you don’t have one already.
I can already hear you asking, “why build a blog when I can use a Facebook or twitter account?”. To that, I then respond, “If you want to build a manor, would you rather do it on a plot own or on a plot you rent?”. Facebook and twitter can decide to block your accounts anytime they feel like it. They are the rented plot in the metaphor.
So, you do not have enough control over those platforms. On the other hand, having your own site gives you the power to set the rules and regulation.
Another problem, when you use a social media platform, is that you do not choose who reads your post. When you publish, your post is just another drop in a huge moving stream of content. As a result, whoever reads it most likely does because he is online at the moment you post it. You may not ever reach those who are not online at that moment. That is why you need an email list. With an email list, you are in charge. You choose who receives what and when.
Before we talk about building an email list, lets define what it is. An email list is a group of people who subscribe to a mailing distribution on any particular topic. The key word here is subscribe. People actually want to hear from you when they subscribe. They want you to give them a reason to become a potential customer. Or a loyal reader at least.
In the following sections we talk about how you can actually build an email list.
These 4 Weapons Will Make You A World Class Email List Hunter:
The most important thing when focusing on collecting emails, don’t focus on it. Don’t get stuck on your goal of collecting emails. In fact you may as well ignore it. Yes, you heard me right. Collect emails by not trying to collect emails. I am the first one to know how crazy that sounds.
When I started collecting emails, that was my first lesson in the prerogative of email collection. There would be many more. You do not control the fingers of the reader. You cannot force the reader to subscribe. It is not like you will put a gun in his face and ask him to. On the other hand, there are a couple of things you can focus on that will make the reader give you his email. All of these things are just within your control. These are the only things you need to focus on. So, lets get to it.
Content Is Your New Marketing:
What has the greatest appeal to a potential subscriber happens to be you control the most. That is, your content. You need to post great content. I know you will see this everywhere. But what makes content actually great? Content is great when it is useful. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Just post useful content. Even mildly useful. Post the best content you are capable of.
It is a no-brainer that great content always keep your readers coming back. Great content is actually the one thing that can and will grow your platform. Even if you have a list of 1 million subscribers, post great content. If your content is useless, you may see them unsubscribe in thousands per day.
Posting great content is the greatest strategy. This is even more important than SEO and Social media marketing. In addition to that, you need to post on a consistent basis. You cannot imagine the number of posts published per second on the internet. If you want to compete with that you cannot just publish a single post and leave it there alone for a year. The only thing that entices a reader more than great content is even more great content.
Conclusion, you need to post great content. Content that is useful in anyway. You need to do this on a consistent basis.
Your Fish Net Has To Be Ready To Catch Fish:
You need to use a dedicated email subscription system. This is a service that will help you capture email addresses and store them. Another advantage of the using an email subscription system is that it does mass email sending. In addition to that, it follows up with your new subscribers. This means, your new subscribers receive ready made emails you designed beforehand.
I said before that you cannot force a reader to give you his email address. What you can do here is get your tools straight. All you have to do is set up the system in a right way, and let the readers feel on your website like they are at home.
Services that offer a good email subscription system, are Aweber and MailChimp. There are many more out there. Some would argue that these are not the best. But, these are the ones I have been using. Particularly Aweber. It is easy to use. My email list is well managed, and their ability to deliver in inboxes is top notch.
Make Your Sign Up Form Visible:
Another important thing you can do is, make your sign up form visible to your potential subscribers. This lets them know that you offer services beyond just posting articles on your website. Also, you do not need to wait to get a sign up form on your website. You need to start building your email list from day 1.
I suggest you put your sign up form on the top right corner of your articles. That way, it will always be seen. We are accustomed to reading from left to right. So, as they read to the right, they see the sign up form.
Give Them A Reason To Subscribe:
To entice your readers into subscribing, you need to offer them an incentive. A reason to subscribe. It is ok to offer them updates, but that does not really have the best conversion rates. If you have good content, your subscribers will decide to check on your website themselves. On the other hand, if you address a specific problem, you may get more of them to subscribe.
The subscribers come to your website in search for solutions to a particular problem. If you offer that solution, then you are more likely to captivate them too.
In the end, it is very easy to put up an email list. You just need to focus on what you can control. Forget about trying as hard as you can to get them to subscribe. Just follow up with the tips above and let them do the rest.
One last thing, you need to understand that you cannot get all of your readers to subscribe. Some people may have the problem you offer a solution to but still, they are not ready to take action to solve it. On the other hand, some people really want to know what to do to better their situation. Those are the people you want to focus on. You need to focus on them and offer them the best possible help you can offer.
